Are you a swimming enthusiast? Or, maybe you even consider
yourself an expert on all things swimming related. Whatever the case may be, if
you love splashing in the water, you probably love learning about swimming too.
And, no matter how much you think you know, chances are you didn’t know these
odd and intriguing little tidbits!
Swimming is Ancient
You might think that swimming for recreation is a relatively
new invention, but you’d be wrong! Swimming for leisure has been around since
prehistoric times, and you can even find references to it in the Bible and
other ancient works!
Samurai Could Swim
You may have heard of the Samurai, the warriors of
pre-modern Japan. What you might not know, however, is that the art of swimming
was actually one of their noble skills.
It’s in the Books
Nowadays, it’s not uncommon to find books about swimming
littering library and bookstore shelves.
However, the first book on swimming is actually a whole lot older than
you might think!
It was written all the way back in 1538 by a man named
Nikolaus Wynmann. He was a German professor who decided to pen the book A Dialogue on the Art of Swimming.
Don’t Go Topless
Nowadays, men tend to wear nothing but a pair of swim trunks
(or less) when they dive into the water.
However, for a long time, men’s bathing suits covered the
top halves of their bodies as well. It wasn’t until 1935 that topless male
swimsuits were invented in the United States. How scandalous!
So, what do you think? Do these fun facts surprise you? Or,
maybe you really did know them already, in which case you’re a true swimming
pro and need to share some of your knowledge with the rest of the world!
