Often, when people are new to fiberglass pool ownership, they make mistakes that they never should have made. One of the big
ones is draining their pools. Inexperienced pool owners will sometimes do this
for cleaning or to try and deal with other issues. But, the truth is, very
rarely do you actually need to drain your pool. And, when possible, you should
avoid a full drain at all costs since it can potentially cause some serious
pool problems.
The
Dreaded Pop-Up
Sometimes, when a fiberglass pool is drained
and all that water pressure it’s used to is gone, the pool shell can pop up
from its spot. And, even worse yet, fixing it can be extremely expensive.
Sometimes, the shell may even get severely damaged in the process, which would
mean you’d have to buy a new one, and they’re not cheap!
Thankfully, popping up is rare with properly
installed pools. But, it can definitely still happen, so try and avoid draining
at all costs.
Bulging
Pool Walls
If you’re lucky enough to escape the pop-up,
that doesn’t mean that draining won’t affect your pool in other ways. For
example, it’s very common for pools to develop bulging side walls as a result
of draining. This type of structural damage is really hard to recover from and
often causes people to give up on their pools entirely.
Wasted
Money and Water
Even if you escape actual pool damage, think
of all of the water and related money you waste when you drain a pool
prematurely. Understand that even the most serious pool and water issues can
often be fixed without a full drain. So, why risk damaging your pool and
spending a lot of money in the process if you don’t have to?
The bottom line is that pool draining is
rarely a good idea. And, it’s never a good idea to do on your own. If you ever
think you may need your pool drained, don’t do anything until you call on a
professional first. Chances are, they’ll have a drain-free solution to offer
you. But, just in case they don’t, they’ll at least know how to drain the pool
properly and to minimize possible damage.
