Using Dirt to Raise a Pool

Installing a pool often presents many challenges. A common one, for example, is when your desired pool site is not very level. While most pools are slightly off-level, you obviously don’t want your pool to be too off-level. In many cases, being off-level by more than an inch or so does have the potential to eventually cause problems.

One way that contractors sometimes attempt to combat this issue is by building up the part or parts of the pool that slope downward with dirt. While this option can sometimes work, this method is not recommended unless you truly have no other options.

You’ll Need to Have the Soil Tested

Bear in mind that not all soil, or even most soil, is going to be a suitable base for placing a pool and a patio. And, in order to determine whether or not you have the right kind of soil, you’ll need to have it tested, which can add yet another step and another expense to the pool installation project.

Regardless, if you really want to try this option, then go ahead and have your soil tested. Just understand that, even if it is suitable as a pool base, compacting it to the right level can be difficult, so you may be setting yourself up for yet another hurdle.

You May Run the Risk of Settling

Another potential issue to be aware of when you build up a pool site with dirt is that your pool may settle over time. This can lead to cracks in the pool, an uneven patio surface, and other issues that you’ll want to avoid.

The Value of Expert Help

Ultimately, building up a pool area with dirt isn’t recommended in most cases. So, what does this mean for you if you have an uneven pool site? Most likely, it just means you need to work with a highly qualified pool installation company.

These companies can often map out a better, more suitable site on your property so that you can avoid filling with dirt. They may also be able to install a pool that’s acceptably level, despite the challenges of your site, or they may have other methods, such as using a concrete slab or building a retaining wall, that can either provide you with a level pool without dirt usage or that can circumvent the common problems associated with dirt usage.

Really, it all boils down to choosing the right professional for the job. If you do that, you can overcome almost any problem.
