Owning a pool is a lot of fun, but it’s also a lot of hard
work. As a pool owner, you may have to deal with a few issues and problems from
time to time. One common issue that you may face at one point or another is green
water in your swimming pool.
When the water suddenly turns green, it can be quite
shocking. However, don’t panic. Instead, work to determine the cause of your
green water, even if it means calling in a professional pool service. Once
you’ve figured out the cause, you can decide on the best and most effective
fix.
Poor pH Balance
When your pool water is not properly maintained at the right
pH balance, bacteria begins to flourish rapidly. As the bacteria grows, it can
lead to discoloration of your water. This is especially true if the pH is too
high since bacteria can’t be killed with high levels oh pH.
For best results, keep pH levels between 7.2 and 7.8. And,
if you’re having trouble maintaining your levels, get some professional help to
figure out how to get your water back on track.
Inadequate Chlorine
All pools need chlorine in order to stay healthy and safe.
If you have forgotten the chlorine for a few days or you
haven’t been adding in enough chlorine each time, bacteria and algae may grow and
turn your pool water green.
Try upping your chlorine levels to see if that fixes the
problem. Remember, you cannot over-chlorinate a pool, so don’t be afraid to be
liberal with the chlorine application.
Especially Warm, Humid Temperatures
Pools are, of course, designed to be used in hot
temperatures.
However, if you’re having an especially hot, humid season,
this could lead to the development of algae, even if you’re chlorinating
properly and have the right pH balance.
As frustrating as that can be, don’t panic. If it’s the
weather that’s causing your water to turn green, you’ll likely need an
algaecide specifically designed to kill weather-related algae growth.
As you can see, pool problems do pop up from time to time,
including the presence of green water. If you experience this problem yourself,
take action right away to prevent it from getting worse.
