Swimming is a lot of fun, not to mention the fact that it’s
wonderful exercise. However, many people find that they burn even more calories
and get even more fit when they increase their swimming speed. If you’d like to
“feel the burn” a little more during your workout routine, or if you’re
preparing for a swim race, consider these simple tips for speedier swimming.
Get Some Feedback
First things first, you can’t swim at your fastest if you
don’t have proper swimming technique. And, if you’re like most people, then
your technique is probably far from perfect.
The best way to get your technique up to snuff is to get
some feedback on how you swim. Ask a swim coach or someone you consider a good
swimmer to take a look at your strokes. Often, they can provide invaluable
feedback on what you could do better.
If you take their advice, you can work to improve your
swimming technique and, as a result, your own speed.
Stay Horizontal
In addition to improving technique, try and stay as
horizontal as possible when you swim. It’s not nearly as easy as you think,
something you’ll discover once you start focusing on your positioning.
However, the more horizontal you can make and keep your
body, the less drag you’ll experience. And, the less drag you experience, the
more speed you’ll gain.
Practice Your Kicks
One of the most important factors in your swimming speed is
how well you kick.
Remember that you don’t want your kicks to break the water
surface. You also don’t want them to move too low below your body. Improper or
weak kicks will produce drag and slow you down.
Try doing some kicking drills. Hold on to the edge of the
pool and let your legs do all the work, focusing on improving your kick each
time. With enough practice, you should master the art of perfect kicking.
If you can follow these tips and put in regular practice,
you should see a big improvement in swimming speed in no time at all.
