Pool Maintenance

Having a swimming pool is a wonderful privilege, but it’s also a lot of responsibility. Undoubtedly, you want to be able to enjoy your pool all season long and then for years to come. In order to do that, though, there are some basic maintenance tips you need to follow carefully.

Skimming and Basic Cleaning
To start with, it’s very important to use your skimmer on your pool. Ideally, you should do this each day. The reason this is so important is that dirt, bugs, leaves, and general debris build up quickly in a pool. Not only does too much debris make your pool disgusting, but it can also clog the filter and cause other problems.

In addition to your daily skimming, you should make an effort to vacuum the bottom of your pool at least every other day. This will help you to get up any debris that your skimming missed.

Shocking
On a fairly regular and as-needed basis, you’ll also need to “shock” your pool, which means putting in high levels of chlorine.

You’ll always want to shock the pool if you develop a bacterial problem, if your water gets cloudy, or if you notice algae buildup or discoloration. It’s also not a bad idea to consider shocking after heavy use, like after a pool party.

Even if you don’t have these types of problems, you should still get on a regular shocking schedule. How often you’ll need to shock the pool will depend on its size and frequency of use, among other factors. You can always check with your pool manufacturer or provider to determine how often shocking is recommended.

Pool Deck Cleaning
One final tip is to regularly clean off the pool deck, preferably after each use.

The deck often becomes full of dirt, rocks, and leaves, which can easily make their way into your water. Plus, it’s all too easy to leave pool items out on the deck, where they can cause a slipping hazard if they’re not picked up.

By following these basic pool maintenance tips and striving to take great care of your pool in general, you should be able to enjoy your pool for the entire season and even longer!
