Understanding the Different Types of Spas

You’ll often hear people say that they want to add a “spa” to their home. However, it can be hard to tell what they really mean. This term gets thrown around so much that people are confused about its meaning and what does and does not constitute a spa.

If you’re in that confused state and are thinking about adding some type of spa to your home, don’t worry. It’s pretty easy to understand the various options.

A Wide Range of “Spas”

First of all, know that, when people say “spa,” they usually just mean something that holds hot, often-jetted water. Thus, this nickname can actually apply to a wide range of different things. To avoid confusion, it’s often best to educate yourself on the various things people call spas. From there, you can figure out which one you want and call things by their proper name to avoid further confusion.

For starters, there are hot tubs, which are one of the simplest types of “spas.” They may feature jets, but they’re usually not very fancy otherwise. More often than not, they don’t even have contoured seating areas. Hot tubs are usually made of wood, and, while they may not be super elaborate, they are affordable and a good option for many people.

Next up, you have whirlpools, which feature heated water that moves in a a circular fashion. To add to the confusion, hot tubs can sometimes fall into the whirlpool category as well. Generally, though, when people say they want a whirlpool, they are thinking of acrylic spas. They may also call them “Jacuzzis,” not realizing that Jacuzzi is really just a brand name and not a type of spa.
